The Second Mediterranean Assessment Report (MAR2), coordinated by MedECC, will provide an updated scientific overview of climate and environmental challenges in the Mediterranean. Building on the first report (MAR1), MAR2 reflects recent scientific advances and evaluates the effectiveness of actions taken so far. The process began with a scoping survey and meeting in April 2025, and the first in-person author meeting will be held in Marseille in November 2025, gathering over 60 experts from 17 countries.
MAR2 is structured into seven chapters. The first chapter frames the Mediterranean climate challenge, discussing vulnerability, resilience, and governance diversity. The second chapter examines the drivers of change, including climate, environmental, and socio-economic pressures, as well as systemic risks. The third chapter focuses on the impacts and risks for both human and natural systems, highlighting inequalities and vulnerabilities.
Adaptation strategies are reviewed in the fourth chapter, covering community-led, technological, and institutional responses. The fifth chapter addresses mitigation and decarbonization, exploring emission reduction pathways and nature-based solutions. Chapter six analyzes policies, governance, economic instruments, and financing for transitions, while the final chapter emphasizes the need for transformative societal change to achieve sustainability.
Objectives
- Understand the current challenges the Mediterranean region is facing and is likely to face in the future.
- Understand the Structure and Goals of MAR2: Brief participants on the report’s organization, key themes, and its purpose in addressing climate and environmental challenges in the Mediterranean.
- Highlight Key Scientific Advances and Gaps: Summarize major scientific progress since MAR1, and identify remaining knowledge gaps and research needs relevant to the region.
- Discuss Stakeholder Roles and Next Steps: Clarify the roles of experts, stakeholders, and policymakers in the MAR2 process, and outline immediate actions or contributions needed for the next phase.
