Methane is the second most important greenhouse gas after CO₂, with a global warming potential 28 times higher over 100 years. Although it remains in the atmosphere for around 12 years, reducing methane offers a powerful opportunity for near-term climate action aligned with the Paris Agreement goals.At COP26 in 2021, over 150 countries committed to the Global Methane Pledge, aiming to cut methane emissions by at least 30% by 2030, with agriculture and livestock responsible for nearly 40% of emissions.
One of the most effective solutions is anaerobic digestion of livestock manure combined with best manure management techniques. This reduces methane emissions, produces renewable biogas, recovers valuable nutrients, lowers pollutants, and supports rural development through circular bioeconomy models. Scaling these solutions offers significant climate benefits while strengthening sustainable food systems and rural livelihoods worldwide.

- Share implementation experiences and challenges related to scaling biogas solutions including technology, financing, social acceptance and regulation.
- Explore policy instruments and financing mechanisms, data systems to support scale-up.
- Advocate for the inclusion of biogas strategies and manure management strategies in national agricultural and climate policies aligned with the Global Methane Pledge and Paris Agreement.
